Jomtien Beach is located just a couple of kilometers over Pattaya Hill past South Pattaya. Jomtien is a long stretch of beach and is a very popular location for both international tourists and Thai people. The beach is always busy with water sports activities like windsurfing, parasailing, kite surfing, aquaplaning behind speed boats and jet skis. The Thai national jet ski team uses Jomtien Beach as one of their most common practice locations. Since the weather in Thailand is hot all year round, Jomtien is just about always busy from early mornings to late in the evenings with bars and restaurants usually staying open till around 1am.

Over the last few years Jomtien Beach has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Thailand and subsequently the development of new condominiums, hotels and resorts has been off the charts. It seems every where you look there is a new high rise condo under construction. In the next couple of years there is a planned development called Ocean 1 which will see the tallest building in all of Thailand built just 200 meters from Jomtien Beach. It should be quite a sight and apartments in this enormous project are currently for sale.

Although Jomtien has become a very busy area especially on the weekends as many expats and Thai’s from Bangkok take advantage of the short 2 hour drive to enjoy the beach, it is still quite relaxed when compared to the high octane energy of central Pattaya, Beach road and the Walking Street area. It’s only minutes by car, motorbike or baht bus back to Pattaya but far enough away to feel like you are away from the stresses of city life. This is why so many condominiums occupy this area. The price of a beach front apartment with a spectacular ocean view compared with the equivalent in a Western country is far, far cheaper and the cost of upkeep is also very low.

Jomtien is a relatively self contained area with shopping centers in the near vicinity, numerous Thai, seafood and Western style restaurants along the main strip across from the beach, a number of gyms, beer bars and too many hotels, bungalows and guest houses to mention. You could spend weeks or months in the Jomtien area without having to leave.

The water at Pattaya Beach is questionable when it comes to how clean it is for swimming but the water at Jomtien Beach does look a lot cleaner although it is still not as clear as the water at Phuket, Koh Samui or the nearby island of Koh Samet. In general hundreds of people swim at Jomtien Beach everyday without a problem. Due to its close proximity to central Pattaya it’s definitely worth a trip over Pattaya Hill and down to Jomtien Beach if you are on holidays in the area.
