Although Pattaya is known to be a wild and perhaps decadent holiday destination for tourists from all over the world, Pattaya is still a very safe place to travel around by day or by night. Pattaya has a reputation for attracting undesirables but even if this happens to be true, rarely do you ever see much trouble for tourists or expats in the Pattaya area. With all the wild drinking and partying fun that happens in Pattaya every single night and day of the year it is still an extremely safe area in most respects. The following Pattaya safety tips are just something to be aware of just in case and will allow you to avoid potential trouble if you witness anything brewing.

The first Pattaya safety tip I would like to mention is never carry too much cash around on your person and certainly never flash your cash around in public. This is probably wise advice no matter where in the world you are but in Pattaya it is wise not to be seen with a lot of cash for two reasons. Although it does not happen often, tourists in Pattaya have been known to get bashed and have their money stolen after locals have witnessed someone with a substantial amount of cash on them. Not only have people been bashed for cash but on some occasions tourists have been followed back to their hotel and when back in their room, thieves have knocked on the door to the hotel room posing as hotel staff and then forced their way into the room and stolen money and other valuables.

Another important safety tip is to never get in the way of Thai people if they happen to be having an argument with one another. You are a guest in Thailand and if you see Thai people having an altercation or a Thai man having a fight with a Thai girl, never intervene under any circumstances. Thai people hate it when farangs (foreigners) interfere with their personal business. Many tourists especially men have seen a Thai man arguing with a Thai bar girl and gone over to help only to have a group of Thai men give him a beating which could result in serious injury or even something even worse.

An essential Pattaya safety tip is to know that if you take a girl from a bar you always need to pay her the amount you both agreed on when she leaves. Even though prostitution is illegal in Thailand you will get into all sorts of trouble if you don’t pay the bar girl after you have spent time with her. This is an unwritten rule within the bar scene and one safety tip to be aware of.

Always wear a helmet when riding a motorbike around Pattaya. The police are very strict on this rule these days and if you are caught without a helmet you will be fined and you will not get your bike back till the fine is paid in many instances. Also it is wise to wear a helmet since there are many accidents involving motorbikes and tourists that are rarely broadcast over the news, often involving cases of head injuries.

Beware of dark sois (streets) late at night. Although not too common these days, many tourists have been mugged by local youth gangs looking for cash or valuables in sois that are dark and quiet.

Finally one more very important Pattaya safety tip is to always pay your bar bill before you leave the bar. Sometimes tourists will accumulate quite a large bar bill after drinking in the same bar for a lengthy period of time and then skip out on paying the bill when no one is looking. Chances are someone will be looking and you may be beaten for trying to rip off the bar or worse, if you are caught by the police for doing this you may find yourself in a Thai jail indefinitely until they feel like letting you out and you will not only have to pay back the money to the bar you will likely be deported from Thailand for life.

Pattaya is generally a very safe place to be and by following the previous Pattaya safety tips you will most likely avoid any problems and have a thoroughly enjoyable holiday.
